The Medina and its Koutoubia

The Medina district in Marrakech is a very populated and bustling area. Home to a large souk or market, it contains hundreds of labyrinthine streets where it is almost impossible not to get lost at some point—but don't worry, you can get help; Moroccans are so kind.

During your visit to the imperial city—during the Marrakech New Year, for example—you can find carpets, spices, clothes, paintings, pottery, and plenty of haggling. The word "Medina" in North Africa simply means city or town, but they are usually walled areas. You will always feel safe in the Medina. Visiting the Medina is one of the best things to do in Marrakech; it can take you a day or even longer because you will never get bored. Even if it is not your first time, there are so many activities to do in this place. All the monuments, the majority of museums, and accommodations are located within the Medina. It is the most touristy and charming part of Marrakech, and that is why you will spend most of your time there.

Koutoubia Mosque

The Koutoubia Mosque is located between the Marrakech Medina and the New City, just 200 meters from Jemaa el-Fnaa square (visiting Jemaa el-Fnaa is one of the top 3 things to do in Marrakech).

Its dimensions make it an extraordinary construction: the square minaret stands 69 meters high, reaching 77 meters at the tip of the spire. Up to 20,000 worshippers can pray in one of the largest prayer halls in the Islamic West. Like all active Muslim places of worship in Morocco, the Koutoubia Mosque has not been open to non-Muslim visitors since a law to that effect was established during the French Protectorate.
